Catharine Lester   BMus Hons (LOND)  PGCE  MISM
Second Violin Tutor - Intermediate Orchestra

NYO Events Administrator

Catharine studied music at London and Cambridge universities. She started off at Goldsmiths' College as a first study pianist but changed to violin because the college was the National Centre for Orchestral Studies and she adored the excitement of playing Romantic and 20th Century orchestral repertoire.
She then had a career in music publishing working as Education Sales and Marketing Manager for Europe's largest music publisher, the Music Sales Group. One of her roles was supporting educational composers and giving workshops to teachers promoting the catalogues of Chester Music and Novello among others.  Throughout this time she continued her violin playing in London, East Anglia and regularly with the Cambridge Philharmonic.
She moved to Nottinghamshire with her young family in 2002, and set up a private music teaching practice teaching violin, piano and theory. She also has a string quartet with other NYO tutors, playing regularly for weddings and corporate events. She loves the vibrant music scene in the East Midlands and, as a freelance violinist, enjoys a variety of playing both chamber and orchestral. She was delighted to join Nottingham Youth Orchestra as a tutor in 2016 and has subsequently taken on the role of NYO Events Administrator.
Catharine says: "one of the joys of tutoring in NYO is seeing the successes of students and hearing them perform in Nottingham's concert halls. The progression of musical youngsters from Training through to Senior Orchestra is particularly heartwarming and we are so lucky to have a 3-tier orchestral system in NYO as that is unusual these days."
