Programme notes
These programme notes have been specially written for a junior school audience. They introduce the music and its composers in a fun, accessible way, helping young listeners discover interesting facts and enjoy the music as they listen.
1. Bacchanale Suite - Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 – 1921)
Camille Saint-Saëns was a French composer who loved writing music full of colour, excitement and drama. Bacchanale comes from his opera Samson and Delilah. It is a lively dance scene inspired by celebrations in the ancient world, where people danced and feasted in honour of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and celebration.
As you listen, imagine a spectacular party full of dancing and excitement! Can you hear the swirling melodies, the driving rhythms and the unusual sounds of the orchestra? Listen out for the oboe playing a special tune inspired by Middle Eastern music. The music builds in energy, becoming faster and more thrilling. Can you resist tapping your feet?
2. The Nutcracker Suite – March, Chinese Dance and Dance of the Mirlitons
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer who wrote some of the world's most famous music for ballet. The Nutcracker tells the magical story of a young girl called Clara, who receives a nutcracker doll as a Christmas present. When everyone is asleep, the doll comes to life and takes her on a wonderful adventure.
In the March, listen for the strong, steady beat that makes you imagine toy soldiers marching. The Chinese Dance is short, lively and playful, with a bouncy tune played by the flute and piccolo. Finally, the Dance of the Mirlitons (also known as the Dance of the Reed Flutes) features delicate, dancing melodies played by the woodwind instruments. Can you spot the different instruments and imagine the magical characters dancing across the stage?
3. Into the Storm - Robert W. Smith (1958–2023)
Robert W. Smith was an American composer who was famous for writing exciting music for wind bands and orchestras. He often used music to tell stories and paint pictures in our imaginations. Into the Storm is full of energy and drama, taking us on a musical journey through a powerful storm.
As you listen, imagine dark clouds gathering, the wind beginning to howl and rain pouring down. Can you hear the music building in excitement, with powerful rhythms and dramatic sounds from the instruments? Listen for moments when the music becomes quieter before bursting into life again, just like a storm growing stronger. Can you imagine being caught right in the middle of it?
