Programme notes
These programme notes have been specially written for a junior school audience. They introduce the music and its composers in a fun, accessible way, helping young listeners discover interesting facts and enjoy the music as they listen.
1. Tristickery - Richard Schinstine
Time to turn up the excitement with our percussion ensemble as they open the Main Stage Concert! Richard Schinstine is an American composer who wrote music especially designed to explore the wonderful sounds and rhythms of percussion instruments. Tristickery is a lively and playful piece that shows just how much fun can be made with drums and other percussion instruments.
As you listen, see how many different sounds you can spot. Can you hear the different rhythms, the changing patterns and the clever musical conversations between the players? Watch how the performers work together to keep everything in time. You might be surprised by just how many different sounds percussion instruments can make!
2. Galloway Drumcall - Heinz von Moisy (1935–2017)
Heinz von Moisy was a German percussionist, composer and teacher who loved exploring the exciting sounds and rhythms that can be created with drums. In Galloway Drumcall, written for percussionists, he takes inspiration from the powerful rhythms of Scottish pipe bands and marching drummers.
As you listen, imagine the sound of a marching band approaching! Can you hear the different drums calling and answering one another? Listen out for the strong beats, exciting rhythms and different sounds created by the four performers. Watch how they work together to create a lively and energetic performance!
