Robert Parker - Horn Tutor

Sarah Cresswell - NTO 2nd violin tutor Originally from Bath, Robert encountered youth orchestras at all levels; school, music centre and the County of Avon Schools Orchestra with whom he visited Bermuda, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines..and Tewkesbury Abbey. He is a Graduate and Fellow of Trinity College of Music, London, studying with John Burden, former principal horn of the London Symphony Orchestra. Playing experience as a student included principal horn with the Snape Maltings Training Orchestra, working with conductors such as Gennadi Rohzdestvensky, Rudolph Schwarz, Elmer Bernstein, Alexander Schneider, George Malcolm and Hugh Maguire. He achieved Grade 8 piano under the guidance of the ever patient Valda Aveling, and gained a PGCE, before coming to Nottinghamshire as a brass teacher in 1980.

Over the years Robert has taught many former NYO brass players, and currently is teaching or has started off students in all the orchestras - NYTO, NYIO and NYO. Robert is a member of the Executive Committee of the British Horn Society, and regularly contributes articles and reviews to the Society's Horn Player Magazine, including educational material for young aspiring horn players! He is also Nottinghamshire Representative for Trinity College London music examinations. Robert has had two horn concertos composed for him - by Andy Evans and David Machell - and gave the first performances of each.  He has also been soloist in concertos by Richard Strauss, Schumann, Haydn and Mozart with the NSO, NPO, NCO and the Orchestra of the Restoration.  He is a member of the Hough Ensemble (a wind and piano group) which will be performing again for the "Live at Lunch" series of concerts at the Theatre Royal Nottingham in 2020.

He continues to work as a professional freelance horn player with a range of orchestras including the British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, Orchestra da Camera and English Pro Musica as principal horn.  In 2014 he was a founder member of the Southwell Music Festival Sinfonia directed by Marcus Farnsworth, and has been involved in each Festival since. In addition, for the Southwell Music Festival Fringe in August 2019 he assembled "Horns United" - a group of nine horn players which included both current and former members of the NYO - that gave a concert devoted to the horn entitled "Round the Horn", where he also premièred David Machell's Sonata for Horn & Piano with Antony Clare.

He plays the horn professionally for many choral societies and operatic groups across the Midlands and convenes players for a range of ensembles.

Robert has a wealth of conducting experience as the Music Director and Conductor of the Nottingham Concert Band, a thriving community group of over 70 instrumentalists which recently performed for the 2019 World Croquet championships held in the UK, and he has successfully directed West Bridgford and Long Eaton Operatic Societies in productions of Calamity Jane and Kiss Me Kate .
