NYO - Nottingham Youth Orchestra
Senior NYO regularly receives praise for its outstanding performances of a wide range of repertoire. NYO’s talented young musicians experience the thrill of three annual public concerts, residential weekends and workshops. The highlight of many students' experience is the tour, usually to Europe in the first week of the summer holidays.
The orchestra’s regular conductor is Alex Robinson, and NYO also benefits from visiting guest conductors such as James Lowe – himself a former member of NYO. Exposing NYO to a variety of conducting styles and repertoire helps to raise standards and develop orchestral playing.
In addition NYO’s concerts often feature established professional soloists and gifted young soloists starting out, so NYO learns when to accompany and when to shine. NYO members who are awarded the annual Needham Scholarship are given the opportunity to perform a solo piece with their fellow orchestral players, usually at the summer term concert.
“Conductor Alex Robinson not only extracts musical excellence from his young players but also gives the impression that doing so has been a lot of fun.”
