Helen Butcher

NYIO Cello Tutor

Helen is a cellist based in Nottingham, having relocated to the Midlands in 2024 from Downe House School in Berkshire.

Helen graduated with a BA(Hons) in Music from Durham University in 2018, where she was a Vice Chancellor’s Music Scholar. She also holds an MSc in Performance Science from the Royal College of Music, where she studied cello with Amanda Truelove. Alongside her work with NYIO and freelance cello playing, Helen works in the Learning and Engagement department at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and teaches Music Theory to the CBSO Children’s Chorus.

“I have such amazing memories of my own time in youth orchestras and ensembles growing up, particularly East Sussex Youth Orchestra. Having the opportunity to play great music with like-minded friends (many of whom I am still in contact with today!) was always a lot of fun. I am very excited to be joining the team at NYO to help create equally amazing memories for the young musicians here.”
