James Moss

Jim joined the NYO Team in 2026 following a long career as a musician in the British Armed Forces. He began his musical service in the Army before spending two decades with the RAF Music Services, performing as a percussionist and, more recently, serving as Bandmaster of the Central Band of the RAF. His career has taken him around the world, appearing in many of the world’s leading venues and contributing to major State Ceremonial events, including the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Jim enjoys working across the full spectrum of percussion instruments and has played an extensive range of musical genres, from orchestral and symphonic wind band repertoire to big band, jazz, and musical theatre.

Alongside his performance career, Jim is an experienced percussion educator with a background in both private teaching and school-based tuition. Following his retirement from the RAF earlier this year, he looks forward to dedicating more time to developing the next generation of percussionists while contributing his expertise to the NYO team.
