We have exciting plans to open our 28th November 2026 3pm (Time TBC) 40th Anniversary Celebration Concert at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall. We are adapting a grand fanfare piece by percussionist and composer Ralph Wyld entitled ‘The World Is Waking Up’ which had its premiere at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The piece is composed for multiple percussionists and brass players plus our NYJO jazz orchestra saxophonists and all our other orchestral players will be joining in the fun.

NYO would love it if the next generation of youngsters could be involved too!

Celebration Concert details...

The whole concert is an ideal opportunity for youngsters to experience a live orchestral concert given by their peers. Enjoy performances by all four NYO orchestras including NYJO, the Nottingham Youth Jazz Orchestra. Discover why NYO is ‘where young musicians shine’ and immerse in a programme of youthful exuberance including classical masterpieces (e.g. Prokofiev Lieutenant Kijé Suite) and popular favourites. Plus last, and certainly not least, this celebration concert features famous Nottingham violin soloist Braimah Kanneh-Mason (Chineke!, Clean Bandit, BBC Proms) who will perform a favourite concerto of his.

Full concert details will appear here (when ready)

From NYO’s young Training Orchestra where youngsters discover the joys of making music together, through Intermediate Orchestra where youngsters build confidence in their playing, to the senior Nottingham Youth Orchestra, which is often the springboard to a lifetime of music involvement, plus the high standard of playing by NYJO our enthusiastic jazz orchestra - you’ll come away having been part of NYO ‘Where Young Musicians Shine’ as they look ahead to their next 40 years of remarkable music making!

NYO needs musicians to join the band! Is your youngster aged 5-11 and able to hold a rhythm?

…No matter what instrument you play, or even if you’ve yet to discover your musical calling, NYO invites children and school groups to take part in our fully immersive rhythmic experience for FREE!

How?  Using your own (possibly homemade) small hand-held percussion, you can add your sound from the audience and join in with NYO’s giant percussion section. To give you an idea, the Fanfare begins with vocal whispered sounds and grows with opportunities to follow the conductor and join in with various rhythmic ostinati (repeating pattern) as the music builds.

How much you are involved is up to you. Families might like make their own small untuned percussion to bring along. You could simply join in by clapping to experience being part of our spectacular Brass & Percussion Fanfare and see how well you’re able to follow a conductor.

OR, if your School would like to be more involved, look out for our Schools’ Pack (via Dropbox on this page when ready) which will give more detailed information about the music (e.g. the small percussion that’s ideal to bring, the rhythmic patterns you can prepare, sound file and simple score) as well as ideas for everybody to make their own percussion instruments to enjoy playing on the day.
